The final cut

Well it had to end one day, and where better than where it all started in September 2009. Now in 2025, this photograph has been taken nearly exactly where the 2009 one was taken, and thats a wrap! The canal here has not changed all that much in sixteen years, apart from some tree growth.

Many thanks for visiting this blog over the years, it will be left up though will no longer be updated. My waterways website will continue to be updated weekly though.

Goodbye and happy gongoozling!

Moor Lane Bridge

If my lunchtime walks usually were as far as College Road Bridge, they always started at this bridge.

College Road Bridge

In the 2000s i worked at the university in Perry Barr. At lunchtimes i started walking along the nearby canal, the Tame Valley Canal. In 2009 i began this blog showing the things i saw along the canal. Usually, on my lunchtime walks i would go as far as this bridge.

The last stretch

After sixteen years and thousands of posts it is finally time to bring this waterways blog to an end (my waterway adventures are continuing on my dedicated website of course). So, what shall we do for the final week? Well it has to be the canal where it all began, the Tame Valley Canal. Let's go!

Perrywell Road Bridge

My interest in canal walking really began when i worked close to the Tame Valley Canal in Perry Barr and visited the canal at lunchtime. So, this stretch of canal is where it all began.

A-Z (C) : Cut

In the Midlands we call the canals "cuts", the original name of this blog was "Down the cut". Here is the Tame Valley Canal seen from Freeth Bridge.

Rushall

We now end this extended look at the Tame Valley Canal at Rushall Junction, the Tame Valley itself continues onto Walsall but here is where we stop.

Brickfields Bridge

Another bridge, this one for foot traffic and a bit older than the motorway slip road bridges.

Ten years down the cut

Ten years ago I decided to create a blog for my walks along the canals, back then usually just the Tame Valley and Birmingham & Fazeley Canals. Ten years and thousands of posts later I am still walking the canals, rivers and coastlines of this country and hopefully will for many more years. Many thanks to all the visitors over the years, but we're just getting started!

Now to continue our extended in-depth walk along the Tame Valley we began in Witton, now we are deep into Great Barr.

Tagged

As the Tame Valley passes through urban areas for most of it's route it has quite a bit of grafitti.

Brickfields Turnover Bridge

You can cross over to the towpath on the other side here but we'll stay on the side we've been on since Witton.
