Soar at Narborough

This week's theme is a fairly minor river, the Soar in Narborough, Leicestershire. Its still a young river here, it'll travel across the entire county before eventually joining the Trent.

Lock Keepers Cottages (6) : Leawood

As the Nightingale Arm was private it had a lock to maintain water levels and control access. A dwelling was built at the junction for the staff who operated the lock. The building has not been lived in since the 1970s and is now pretty derelict.

Aqueduct no more

An aqueduct used to take the canal arm over the railway line but was removed in the 1940s, now all that remains is a footbridge. The watered part of the arm ends here.

To the lead

The Nightingale (also known as Leawood) Arm of the Cromford Canal was built by Florence Nightingale's great-uncle to serve his cotton mills and lead smelters. Though like most of the Cromford Canal it is now unnavigable.

Under the junction

This week's theme are some of the more minor waterways around and the bridges that cross them, they don't get much more minor than this bridge that crosses a brook right next to the Spaghetti Junction.
