The mechanism

Acton Swing Bridge was built in 1933 to replace an earlier stone bridge. This mechanism is used to swing the bridge open to allow large vessels to pass along the river.

Acton Bridge is so-called because of a bridge! This is an impressive swing bridge which carries the A49 across the Weaver.

On the Stratford

The Stratford Canal is a favourite. When i was doing my masters i visited the town a lot to use the archives (as the subject of my thesis was on the economic development of the town due to the coal trade in the early 19th century). Here is a boat on the canal.

Perrywell Road Bridge

My interest in canal walking really began when i worked close to the Tame Valley Canal in Perry Barr and visited the canal at lunchtime. So, this stretch of canal is where it all began.

Approaching a milestone

Well, if you travel the canals you will reach and pass many milestones. However, this blog is reaching a big milestone this week (tomorrow in fact), 3000 posts! So, this week we will not feature any one waterway as a theme but instead will feature some interesting photos we may have missed earlier, and do a bit of reminicing.

Starting with a narrowboat about to pass below Brace Factory Bridge, the feature on the waterway network closest to where i live!

Introducing our new sister site

While this blog will continue with a daily photograph from the waterways of Britain, we also wanted a chance to go more in depth sometimes. So, we have created a British waterways section on our web site. It will have maps, historical information and of course photos! Please check it out!
